Talk about marketing and branding is all the rage these days. All the sensitive new age gurus talk about understanding your personal brand. We’re constantly bombarded by media images, advertising, and are relentlessly saturated by sponsorship, particularly here in sports-mad Australia. It’s worth, however, taking some time to think about what your venue means to your customers. Is it a watering hole? Is it somewhere to escape to? Do people visit you for a special occasion, or is it all about your award-winning parma? It may be a combination of these.

Whatever it is, understanding what makes your business unique, and playing to those strengths, is crucially important. There are simply too many alternatives out there, people vying for your attention and that of your customers. If, however, you can take the time to understand exactly what it is about your business that people like – that keeps them coming back, in other words – then you have a crucial, and defensible, advantage. And that means that you have a road map to drive your business forward. So that everything you do, from promotions, expansion, events, menu design and so on – has a consistent theme. If you’re consistent, then you know what you’re about. You understand your brand.
